On March 23, 1678, Wu Sangui proclaimed himself emperor in Hengzhou
On this day, 347 years ago, on March 23, 1678 (March 1, 1678 in the lunar calendar), Wu Sangui, the leader of the "Three Festivals", proclaimed himself emperor in Hengzhou. Wu Sangui, the leader of the "Three Festivals", proclaimed himself Emperor in Hengzhou. Wu Sangui (1612 - 1678) was a word-long official. He was born in Liaodong in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. His ancestral home was Gaoyou, Jiangsu Province. He is about 1.73 meters tall today. Born in martial arts, Wu Xiangzi, the commander of Jinzhou, was awarded the command of the capital due to his military exploits and his father's shadow. In 1631, in the fourth year of Chongzhen (the fourth year of Chongzhen), he was promoted to the commander of the Liaodong Army, guarding Shanhaiguan. History records that Wu Sangui's troops were "more courageous and more spirited" and were the last fighting cavalry force in the late Ming Dynasty. On March 20, the 17th year of Chongzhen (1644), Li Zicheng's rebels entered Beijing. Chongzhen hanged himself in Jingshan (Meishan), and Beijing fell. Because his concubine Chen Yuanyuan was taken away by Li Zicheng's generals, his father was also detained."It was very cool to kidnap and plunder." He was furious. So he wrote a letter to Dorgun, Prince of Qing Rui, requesting the Qing troops to enter the pass and destroy the rebels. He joined forces with the Qing army to defeat Li Zicheng in the Battle of Stone and was granted the title of King Pingxi by the Qing Dynasty. Soon after, he became the vanguard of the Qing army, pursuing Li Zicheng, pacifying the remaining bandits in Shaanxi and other places, and destroying Zhang Xianzhong, the Sichuan warlord. In 1673 (12th year of the Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty), Xuan Ye, the saint ancestor of the Qing Dynasty, decided to remove the fiefs of the three vassals (Wu Sangui, Shang Kexi, and Geng Jimao). Wu Sangui, Geng Jingzhong (son of Geng Jimao), and Shang Zhixin (son of Shang Keli) refused to hand over power and rebelled. After the "San Francisco" rebellion, their arrogance was very arrogant, and the war spread across half of China. After several years of war, the situation on the battlefield reversed. The rebels were successively defeated by the Qing army, and Geng Jingzhong, Shang Zhixin and others surrendered to the Qing Dynasty one after another. In 1678 (the 17th year of Kangxi), Wu Sangui proclaimed himself emperor in Hengzhou, Hunan Province. His country was called Da Zhou and Jianyuan Zhaowu. He died of illness in Changsha in the autumn of the same year. His grandson Wu Shifan succeeded to the throne and retired to Yunnan. In the 20th year of Kangxi (1681), Kunming was besieged. Wu Shifan committed suicide and the rest surrendered. Wu Sangui's descendants were completely killed. Including infants in swaddling clothes.
