In 1937, a safer vaccine was developed, which was obtained from a non-infectious strain of virus selected after about 200 transfers from one chicken embryo to another. This second vaccine became the standard vaccine in South America. Although Tiller still did not have a scientific title, he was awarded the 1951 Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology for his work.
