Breaking-News >> TodayHistory May 6, 1950 Agnes Smedley died
Seventy-five years ago today, on May 6, 1950 (March 20, 1950 in the lunar calendar), Agnes Smedley passed away. On February 23, 1892, Smedley was born in a miner's family in southern Colorado, USA. She grew up in a difficult family, worked as a laborer, worked as a farmer, and studied intermittently. At the end of 1928, she came to China as a special correspondent for the German "Frankfurter Zeitung". Until the outbreak of the Pacific War, she returned to the United States via Hong Kong. During the 12 years, she visited a large area of our country and came into contact with people from all walks of life. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, she also served as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian and a volunteer staff member of the International Committee of the Red Cross in China. She accompanied the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army at the forefront of the major war zones and was active in the guerrilla areas behind enemy lines. As a reporter and writer, Smedley's reports and writings faithfully reflect reality. In addition to the autobiographical novel "Children of the Earth", most of her books are related to China. "The Chinese Red Army is Marching Forward" is the first book in the world to introduce the Chinese Soviets. "China's War Hymn" is recognized as one of the best battlefield reportage works of World War II. Zhu Dezhuan's "The Great Road" has classic value, while "The Fate of the Chinese People" and "China is Countering Back" both truly reflect the suffering and struggle of the Chinese people, where strength and hope lie. On May 6, 1950, while Smedley was on her way to the new China she had long hoped for, she unfortunately died in London. On her deathbed, she hoped that the Chinese national anthem "March of the Volunteers" would be played at her funeral and her remains would be buried in China. On May 7, 1951, Smedley's ashes were buried in the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing.
