Shang Yue

Shang Yue (1902-1982), named Jian'an and named Zongwu, was born in Luoshan County, Henan Province. Shang Yue was born into a run-down landlord family. In 1921, he entered the preparatory department of Peking University, and later entered the undergraduate department of British literature. In 1927, he went south to join the revolution. In September of the same year, he joined the Communist Party of China in Kaifeng. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Shang Yue began to study history. In 1942, he served as a lecturer and associate professor at Yunnan University. In 1946, he joined the Shandong Liberated Area from Shanghai and served as a professor at Shandong University. In 1950, Shang Yue served as the director of the Department of Chinese History of Renmin University of China and the academic member of the Institute of History of the Department of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Shang Yue's main historical works include "Outline of Chinese History" (the first concise Chinese historical work after the founding of New China, which has been published in Japanese, Russian, Polish and other languages), "Lectures on General History of China", "Preliminary Research on the Origin and Evolution of China's Capitalist Relations", "Exploration of Primitive Social Problems in China" and "Selected Papers on History of Shang Yue".

Shang Yue's literary works mainly include the collection of short stories "Disease" and "Back of the Axe", and the novel "Premeditated".

Lu Xun commented that his short stories were written with a serious attitude and came from a wide range of sources: "intended to ridicule and expose and fight."
