On this day 55 years ago, on May 4, 1970 (March 29, 1970 lunar calendar), Ma Xulun, Vice Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, passed away in Beijing. Ma Xulun (1884-1970), a native of Hangzhou County, Zhejiang Province (now Yuhang), was a member of the Tongmeng Association. He served as the editor of Shanghai (National Quintessence Journal) and other newspapers, the president of Shanghai Labor University, and a professor at Tsinghua University and Peking University. During the Anti-Japanese War, he engaged in anti-Japanese and anti-Chiang activities. In 1945, he initiated the organization of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy in Shanghai in June. On June 23, 1946, he participated in the anti-civil war demonstration held by Shanghai workers, students and people from all walks of life. He was elected as a representative to petition the Nanjing National Government. He was beaten by Kuomintang agents at Xiaguan Station.
