120 years ago today, on January 2, 1905 (November 27, 1904), the British musician Michael Tippett was born. Michael Tippett (M. Tippett, 1905-1998), a famous British modern composer, attracted world attention at the age of 35. He was a late bloomer in the music industry, and was as famous as another British composer, Britton. Tippett's famous works include the oratorio "Children of Our Time", four symphonies, and a large number of stage music and chamber music works. His writing style has undergone changes in different stages, which can be roughly divided into three periods: the style of his early works has a strong lyricism, with the characteristics of post-romanticism and neoclassicism, a large number of use of medieval pastoral polyphony techniques, with pastoral, counterpoint, and intertwined voice techniques. It is simple, exquisite and very complex. The First Symphony was also completed in this period. From the creation of the Second Symphony and the opera King Priam (1958-1961), Tippett's overall musical style entered a rough middle period. At this stage, he used more means of overlapping dichotonality and polytonicity, and his rhythmic language personality was fully mature. His mid-period works are dramatic, full of eloquent power, strong and angular, and more obviously influenced by modern composers such as Stravinsky, Bartok, and Ives. In the early 1970s, with the appearance of the opera "The KnotGarden", Tippett's style changed again. This stage is a fusion of the styles of the previous two periods, combining lyricism and roughness. At the same time, it draws on different types and styles of music from ancient times to the present, popular music and serious music, showing the diversified characteristics of musical styles. Structurally opposed to a single organizing principle, using multiple principles to control the structure. Both the Third Symphony and the Fourth Symphony were born in this period. The domestic research on Tippett is relatively backward. "Teana", No. 3, 2007, has the thesis "Polyphony Structure in Tippett Symphony" written by Dr. Li Ruchun of the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music. This is a document that deeply studies the polyphony technology of Tippett Symphony. Li Ruchun's doctoral dissertation "Analysis and Research on the Composition Techniques of Tippett's Four Symphonies" uses 20th century music analysis techniques (post-Schenck chart analysis techniques, non-tonality music analysis techniques, pan-tonality music analysis techniques, etc.) from the perspective of musical structure, harmony, polyphony, mode, tonality, rhythm, beat, orchestration, etc. to conduct a comprehensive analysis and research on Tippett's symphony creation, representing the highest level of research in this field in China, and is also a very important document in the field of international Tippett research.
