Margaret II ascended the throne and the second female monarch in Danish history was born

Margaret II

Margaret II(Margrethe II) was born on April 16, 1940 in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. She studied constitutional law and philosophy at the University of Copenhagen, studied archaeology at Gerton College, Cambridge, and studied at Aarhus University, the University of Paris, and the London School of Economics. Since Margrethe's father, King Frederick IX, had no male heirs, the Danish government moved in 1953 to amend the Succession to the Throne Act to allow women to inherit the throne. The initiative was approved and supported by the vast majority of Danes. Princess Margaret, the eldest daughter, became Crown Princess. After the death of Frederick IX, Margaret ascended the throne on January 14, 1972.

In 1965, Margaret met and fell in love with Count Henri Monpez, the French ambassador to the UK, in London. Two years later, on June 10, 1967, the two held a grand wedding in Copenhagen's Fredensburg Church in accordance with Danish customs. A year later, two young princes, Frederick and Joachim, passed away one after another. Margaret II visited China in September 1979.

The story of Queen Margaret II being forced to quit smoking

Versatile, best-dressed, Queen Margaret

Elegantly holding a cigarette and smiling at the camera is the familiar public image of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. But this image is about to disappear. Faced with pressure from public opinion, the Queen of Denmark decided not to smoke in public in the future.

The 66-year-old Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is so addicted to smoking that she is nicknamed the "Queen of Smoking Guns".

But according to British media reports on the 25th, as Denmark is about to implement a law banning smoking in public places, the Queen has decided to make a "sacrifice" to change her image of smoking in public. "You will never see the Queen smoking in public again," Danish royal spokesman Lis Fraser Rickson said on the 24th.

The Danish royal family and ministers are also prohibited from smoking in public places under the law, which will come into effect in April next year. The queen's husband, Prince Henrik, and her son, Crown Prince Friedrich, have both successfully quit smoking. To avoid breaking the law, the queen of Denmark's last smoking position may be a remote corner of the palace.

Although often targeted by anti-smoking campaigners, Queen Margaret has never been shy about her smoking addiction. When asked once about her "smoking problem", the Queen replied without hesitation: "I have no problem." After that, the Queen skillfully lit a cigarette.

Key words: January 14, 1940, Margaret II, Denmark
