Treaty on Joint Cooperation and Security between Japan and the United States of 19 January 1960
Today, 65 years ago, on January 19, 1960 (Calendar 21 December 1959) Japan and the United States signed the Japan-US Joint Cooperation and Security Treaty, which came into force on June 23, 1960. The treaty contains 10 articles, including the following: The United States continues to have the right to station its troops and use military bases in Japan; Japan and the United States will pass “effective self-help and mutual assistance”, “maintain and develop their ability to resist armed aggression”; when any side of Japan and the United States undergoes an armed attack on the territory of Japan, the two sides will “take action to deal with common dangers”; the treaty will be valid for 10 years.
