Today, 65 years ago, on January 19, 1960 (Calendar 21 December 1959) Japan and the United States signed the Japan-US Joint Cooperation and Security Treaty, which came into force on June 23, 1960. The treaty contains 10 articles, including the following: The United States continues to have the right to station its troops and use military bases in Japan; Japan and the United States will pass ¡°effective self-help and mutual assistance¡±, ¡°maintain and develop their ability to resist armed aggression¡±; when any side of Japan and the United States undergoes an armed attack on the territory of Japan, the two sides will ¡°take action to deal with common dangers¡±; the treaty will be valid for 10 years.
