On this day, 504 years ago, on April 27, 1521 (March 21, 1521 lunar calendar), the Portuguese explorer Magellan was killed in the Philippines. After arriving in the Philippines, he was killed in a battle with the indigenous people. Magellan was Portuguese and joined the Portuguese National Office of Navigation in 1496. He loved his career in navigation, but, after more than ten years, he realized that he had no future at home. On October 20, 1517, he resolutely left Portugal and came to Spain. On March 18, 1518, he met with King Charles I of Spain and described his plans. On March 22, Charles I and Magellan signed an ocean exploration agreement, forming a team of 261 people, divided into five ships, and set sail on September 20, 1519. This is a route that no one has ever traveled before. The vast sea, where is the future going? The long journey, bad weather, they failed several explorations, and the rations on board began to struggle. Most of the seafarers lost confidence to move on. October 2, 1520. The opponents on the ship took advantage of the somber mood of the whole ship to break out a rebellion against Magellan. Magellan decisively suppressed the rebellion and continued the fleet to sail forward. Nineteen days later, they came to a strait at 52 degrees south latitude. Later generations named it "the Strait of Magellan". The fleet was advancing, and people had to use cowhide, sawdust and mice to satisfy their hunger in the absence of food. Disease took away many lives. Finally, on April 27, 1521, they reached the island of Masobi in what is now the Philippine Islands. Magellan's ideal of circling from the west to the east was realized. After Magellan's death, the last leg of the circumnavigation of the world was completed by his entourage. When returning to Spain, only one of the five ships was left, and only ten people were left.
