Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Riots escalated in Indonesia on May 6, 1998
Twenty-seven years ago today, on May 6, 1998 (April 11, 1998 lunar calendar), riots escalated in Indonesia. Student demonstrators stormed the parliament building. The economic crisis turned into a political crisis, which led to their own downfall, which was unexpected by former Indonesian President Suharto. Indonesia was one of the first countries in Asia to experience an economic crisis. As early as 1997, following Thailand, the Indonesian rupiah repeatedly depreciated and prices rose. The existing gap between the rich and the poor was exposed, and social conflicts intensified. Around February 10, riots broke out in Java, Indonesia, and some shops were smashed, looted and burned. At the end of March, anti-government demonstrations on the streets of Indonesia, which had lasted for more than a month, intensified. In mid-May, riots in Indonesia escalated, and some people began looting and arson. On May 6, a shopping mall in Jakarta, Indonesia, was set on fire, killing at least 110 people. On May 15, Indonesian President Suharto, who was visiting Egypt, returned home early due to domestic tensions. On May 21, Suharto stepped down and Habibi Yibi took over as president. Habibi Yibi also had a difficult time after taking office. He could not offer a cure for the economy, but at least he could do something "practical" to show his political posture. In August, Lieutenant General Prabowo, the son-in-law of former Indonesian President Suharto, was removed from the army after being implicated in the kidnapping and murder of dissidents by special forces last year and earlier this year. In late September, the Indonesian government began investigating Suharto's property transferred overseas. In mid-November, however, Jakarta seemed to be back to six months ago, when clashes between anti-government student demonstrators and security forces left 14 dead and hundreds injured, after Indonesia's joint fact-finding commission investigating the May riots confirmed that 80 women had been raped or humiliated during the riots. Some rioters in the crowd of demonstrators once again targeted Chinese and Chinese property for attack and looting. The riots plagued Indonesia, a reminder of the temporary prosperity created by "power capital".
