On August 26, 2019 (July 26, 2019 in the lunar calendar), Chen Jiayong, the pioneer of hydrometallurgy in my country, passed away. Chen Jiayong, an expert in chemical engineering in China, one of the first batch of doctoral supervisors and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, died of illness in Beijing on August 26, 2019 at the age of 97. Chen Jiayong was born on February 17th, 1922 in Jintang, Sichuan. Graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering of Central University in 1943. In 1951, he received his Ph.D. from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Illinois (Albana-Champaign Campus). Researcher, Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, former deputy director of the institute. In 1980, he was elected a member (academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. After graduation, as a teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry, Department of Chemical Engineering, National Central University, under the guidance of his teacher Gao Jiyu, Chen Jiayong successfully trial-produced DDT, a pesticide monopolized by foreign countries. In 1956, he resolutely gave up the favorable conditions abroad and returned to China to serve. Through his unremitting efforts, China's hydrometallurgy reached the world's advanced level in many aspects. This method has low energy consumption and less pollution, which makes many complex and refractory ore dressing become "waste" into treasure. To pay tribute to Chen Jiayong's many contributions, the first microgravity chemical experimental satellite of China-Israel cooperation, named "Chen Jiayong-1", was successfully launched in India on February 15th, 2017.
