On this day, 45 years ago, on January 21, 1980 (December 4, 1979 in the lunar calendar), the United States announced that it would not participate in the Moscow Olympics to protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Only two cities, Moscow, the Soviet Union, and Los Angeles, the United States, applied to host the 22nd Olympic Games. In October 1974, the 75th session of the International Olympic Committee decided to host it by Moscow. It is scheduled to be held from July 19 to August 3, 1980. Because the Soviet army sent troops to invade Afghanistan on Christmas Eve in 1979, it violated the norms of international law and had a serious impact on the Games. If a country holds the Olympic Games with peace and friendship as its main purposes on the one hand, but sends troops to invade other countries on the other, it will inevitably encounter opposition from the world and condemnation from public opinion. On January 21, 1980, the United States announced that it would not participate in the Moscow Olympics. Many national Olympic Committees successively expressed their position and refused to participate. The China Olympic Committee issued an announcement on April 24, 1980, abandoning participating in the Moscow Olympic Games. Among the 147 national and regional Olympic committees that the International Olympic Committee has recognized, two-fifths have publicly boycotted or refused to participate, and only 80 have participated.
