On February 11, 1855, Shi Dakai, the wing king of the Taiping Rebellion, defeated Zeng Guofan's Hunan Army Navy in Jiujiang. After being defeated in Yuezhou in August 1854, the Taiping Army and the Western Expedition Army all withdrew from Hunan and retreated into Hubei. But Wuhan lost again in October. The Hunan Army marched together with land and water. In the battle in Tianjia Town, the main force of the Taiping Army's navy was exhausted. In early January 1855, the Hunan Army pressed into Jiujiang, and the Western Expedition was very critical. The Taiping Rebellion ordered King Shi Dakai to rescue from Anqing to the west. Dakai used Lin Qirong's troops to guard Jiujiang, Luo Daxian's troops to guard the west bank of Hukou, and he personally led the troops to guard the east bank county seat. On January 29, more than 120 light fast boats that lured the Hunan Army Navy rushed into Poyang Lake. Then immediately block the water jam at the mouth of the lake and cut off its outlet. Small boats were used to attack large ships left in the Yangtze River that were difficult to move, burning more than 40 Xiang Army ships, and the rest retreated to Jiujiang. Late at night this day, Dakai ordered Lin Qirong to advance from Jiujiang and Luotanzi from Xiaochikou to the north and south sides. He sent more than a hundred light boats into the river, attacked the Hunan Army Navy with fire-bomb jets and burned more than a hundred of their warships. Zeng Guofan's boat was also surrounded, and landing in a small boat was avoided. The Hunan Army "lost its naval baggage and no longer formed an army" and returned to Wuhan for renovation. The battles of Hukou and Jiujiang reversed the defeat of the Taiping Army in the Western Expedition. This created conditions for the Taiping Army to conquer Hanyang for the fourth time on February 23 and Wuchang for the third time on April 3.
