107 years ago today, on February 26, 1918 (January 16, 1918), the Happy Valley Stable Fire in Hong Kong. The Stable Fire, also known as the Wuwu Massacre, was a devastating fire in Hong Kong history. On February 26, 1918, Happy Valley held its annual race. It was the 16th day of the first lunar month, and the stadium was full of spectators and the atmosphere was warm. At that time, the facilities of the racecourse were simple, and the spectators' seats were temporarily built with bamboo, wooden boards, sunflower leaves and other flammable materials to form a multi-layer simple stand. When the race was held to the fifth session, the spectator shed suddenly collapsed. The wind was high and the goods were dry, and there were stalls selling cooked food under the shed. The fire was in full swing, and the fire-fighting facilities were not enough. Therefore, the fire was unstoppable. About 600 spectators were killed this time, and the number of injuries was countless. Charity organizations such as the Hong Kong Government Hospital and Tung Wah Hospital made every effort to rescue. The year of the fire broke out was the Lunar New Year, so it was also known as the "Wuwu Massacre". Later, the relevant parties buried about 600 remains of the victims in the coffee garden cemetery, that is, "The Tomb of the Chinese and Western Scholars Who Died in the Wuwu Stables", and an inscription was erected to commemorate their loss.
