Cheng Changgeng, the founder of Peking Opera, was born on November 22, 1811
On this day 214 years ago, on November 22, 1811 (October 7, 1811 lunar calendar), Cheng Changgeng, the founder of Peking Opera, was born. His ancestor lived in Shipai Town, Huaining, Anhui Province. He was born in Chengjiajing, Huangni Town, Qianshan County, on the seventh day of October in the 16th lunar year of Qingjiaqing. He is the 51st generation of the Cheng family. His father Cheng Xianggui was the head of the Sanqing class during the Daoguang reign. In his childhood, he sat in the Hui class (Sanqing class). In the second year (1822), Daoguang went north to Beijing with his father and began to make his mark with the performances of "Wenzhaoguan" and "Battle in Changsha". Later, he became the chief actor of the old students of the Sanqing class. During the years of Tongzhi and Guangxu, he served as the head of the Sanqing class, and his colleagues honored him as the "big boss". He used to serve as the head of the "Jingzhong Temple" and the general manager of the three classes of Sanqing, Chuntai and Sixi. He and the four-happy class Zhang Erkui and the spring Taiwan class Yu Sansheng are three outstanding talents of the first generation of Peking Opera actors. Although they are later than Yu and Zhang Xiang, their prestige is extremely high, and they are called the three heroes of old students and the three tripods of old students. Cheng Changgong ranks first in the "three tripods". He made important contributions to the formation of Peking Opera art and is known as the leader of the Hui class and the originator of Peking Opera. He died on the 13th day of the 12th lunar month in the fifth year of the Qing Dynasty and was buried on the north side of the outer stone road next to Zhangyimen (now Guang'an Gate).
