In 1915, he was admitted to Tsinghua University, and in 1923, he went to the United States to study at the University of Minnesota, where he received a bachelor's degree. He entered the University of Chicago from 1925 to 1928 and received master's and doctoral degrees successively. He returned to China in 1928 and served as professor and director of the Department of Sociology at Jinling University. In 1931, he served as a professor in the Department of Sociology at Tsinghua University and conducted urban economic surveys. In 1935, he served in the Executive Yuan of the National Government and returned to teach in the Department of Sociology of Tsinghua University in 1947.
