Chen Menglei (1650-1741) was named Shengzhai, Tianyi Taoist, and in his later years he was also named Songhe Old Man. Qing Dynasty Min County (now Fuzhou City). Born in the seventh year of Shunzhi of the Qing Dynasty (1650). Chen Menglei was intelligent and famous when he was young. At the age of 12, he was a middle-aged scholar and a middle-aged scholar at the age of 19. He became a scholar in the ninth year of Kangxi (1670). Select virtuous people and appoint them as editors after they are dispersed. In December of the twelfth year of Kangxi (1673), Chen Menglei returned to his hometown to visit relatives. In March of the following year, Geng Jingzhong, King of Jingnan, raised troops in Fuzhou to resist the Qing Dynasty. In Panluo, Fujian, famous scholars were forcibly awarded official positions and coerced scholars to join the rebellion. Chen Menglei fled into the monk's temple, but because his father was detained, he had no choice but to enter Geng Mu. He was later arrested on the charge of "conspiracy" and imprisoned for beheading. In the 21st year of Kangxi (1682), Chen Menglei was rescued by Xu Qianxue, Minister of the Ministry of Punishment, and was transferred to Shangyang Fort in Fengtian (now Liaoning Province). After arriving at the garrison, Chen fell ill; his father and mother died one after another; his wife also died in the exile place. Chen Menglei was extremely sad, but he still couldn't hold the book in his hands and studied and wrote hard. In the 17th year of Fengtian, he taught and wrote, and successively compiled "A Brief Introduction of the Book of Changes","Shengjing Tongzhi","Annals of Chengde County","Annals of Haicheng County","Annals of Gaiping County", etc.

In September of the thirty-seventh year of Kangxi (1698), when Kangxi visited Shengjing (now Shenyang), Chen Menglei offered poems and was recalled to the capital. The following year, he entered the inner garden and served the prince Yin Zhi (the third son of Kangxi) to study. Due to his dedication to his duties, he was very well-liked. In the forty years of Kangxi (1701), Kangxi was appointed to edit "The Integration of Ancient and Modern Books". After 5 years, it was compiled into a book in May of Kangxi's forty-fourth year. The large-scale book "The Integration of Ancient and Modern Books" has a total of 10,000 volumes and a catalog of 40 volumes, divided into 6 volumes: Liyuan, Fang Yu, Minglun, Natural History, Science, and Economy; each edition is divided into several dictionaries, and the whole book has a total of 32 dictionaries; each dictionary is divided into cadres, and the whole book has a total of 6 The book is rich in content, and the distinction is detailed and clear. After publication, it was well received by all parties. Zhang Tingyu, a Qing Dynasty scholar, said: "Since the book contract, one book has run through ancient and modern, and it is all-encompassing. There is no one like my dynasty's" Ancient and Modern Books Integration "." Foreign scholars praised the book as the "Kangxi Encyclopedia".

In the 61st year of Kangxi (1722), Kangxi died and his fourth son, Yin Zhen, succeeded him. After Yin Zhen ascended the throne, Yin Zhi was denounced for his mistakes, and Chen Menglei was implicated. In January of the first year of Yongzheng (1723), he was exiled to Heilongjiang again. At this time, Chen Menglei was 72 years old. Yongzheng ordered Jiang Tingxi, the lecturer of the banquet and the minister of the Ministry of Household, to re-edit the "Integration of Ancient and Modern Books" that had gotten the manuscript ready, remove Chen Menglei's name and replace it with Jiang Tingxi.
