A solemn state funeral was held in London attended by representatives of 110 countries. Afterwards, Sir Winston's body was buried in a small cemetery near his family's ancestral home at Blenheim Palace. Condolences were paid to the statesman who stood tall in the 20th century. For Britain, his death seemed to symbolize the end of a proud century as the British Empire faded. To the world, a British statesman has bid farewell to us. His strong will and eloquence were a symbol of contempt for Hitler. At one of the most difficult moments of World War II, when the German army was sweeping across Europe, Britain elected Churchill as prime minister in 1940. "I offer nothing but blood, toil, tears and sweat," he told the House of Commons grimly. When Britain was alone in the war, fearing German invasion and bombardment at one of the most sinister moments, Churchill defied violence, holding a cigar in his mouth, and holding high his two fingers in the "V" symbol of victory. After Pearl Harbor, the United States entered the war, and he toiled for the leadership and coordination of the Anglo-American and Soviet alliances, which finally destroyed the Axis powers. In his long struggle for public office since the beginning of this century, 1945 was the year he suffered the most painful setback personally. Although the war in Europe had been won at the time, he was defeated by the Labour Party in national elections. After graduating from the Royal Military Academy, he began his career as an officer and war correspondent. He was first elected to Parliament in 1901 and became Lord of the Admiralty shortly before the First World War. Britain holds a state funeral for Churchill. The Royal Guard of Honor escorted Churchill's coffin through the famous "V" gesture in downtown London. It brought confidence and hope to countless people
