39 years ago today, on March 28, 1986 (February 19, 1986 lunar calendar), peasant general Gan Zuchang passed away. Gan Zuchang (1905~ 1986.3.28, lived 81 years) General Gan Zuchang, who was famous all over the country in the 1950s for giving up his high position and voluntarily going home to be a farmer, died on March 28, 1986 in his hometown of Lianhua County, Jiangxi Province, at the age of 81. Gan Zuchang was a native of Lianhua County, Jiangxi Province. He joined the Chinese Red Army of Workers and Peasants in 1928 and endured severe tests in the revolutionary struggle of Jinggangshan and the 25,000-mile Long March. After the liberation of the whole country, he served as the director of the Logistics Department of the Xinjiang Military Region and was awarded the rank of major general in 1955. During the long revolutionary war, Gan was seriously injured in the head three times, and severe concussion sequelae made it difficult for him to maintain leadership work. Leaders and comrades advised him to go to a better place for a long-term recuperation, but Gan Zuchang asked to return to his hometown to work in agriculture. In 1957, with the approval of the organization, Gan Zuchang returned to his hometown, Yanbei Village, Fanglou Township, Lianhua County, Jiangxi Province, where he had been away for more than 20 years, and embarked on a new journey. As soon as Gan arrived in his hometown, he threw himself into the labor of building his hometown. Since then, he has participated in production labor with farmers almost every day for decades, except for illness and going out to meetings. The villagers said with concern: "Old minister, you have suffered so much for the revolution in the past, and now you are not in good health, so don't do what we do, just give us some pointers." Gan Zuchang said with a smile: "I came back to farm, not to be an official and a master, how can I not work?" In order to change the backward face of the countryside, Gan Zuchang risked his life as he did in the war. Yanbei Village is a place with poor soil. One-third of the land in the village is cold pulp fields, and the output is low. Gan Zuchang led the farmers to inspect the cold pulp fields in detail, held dozens of investigation meetings, and finally found a way to transform the fields. Under the leadership of Gan Zuchang, the villagers fought for five consecutive winters and springs, transforming the cold pulp fields and increasing the yield per mu by more than twice. During the 29 years of living in the countryside, Gan Zuchang often went deep into reality, investigated and researched, closely contacted the masses, shared weal and woe with the masses, and insisted on participating in labor. After he returned to his hometown, the organization still paid him his salary, and he used most of his income to build water conservancy and power stations for his hometown. With his efforts, the township has successively built water conservancy projects such as Jiangshanpi, Kuaixiangpi, Zhilongpi, Majiaao Reservoir, and Longtan Reservoir. He has made great contributions to promoting the economic development of his hometown.
