On May 24, 2002 (April 13, 2002 lunar calendar), Russia and the United States signed the Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Offensive Forces. On May 24, 2002, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President George W. Bush signed the Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Offensive Forces and the Joint Declaration on the New Strategic Relations between Russia and the United States in Moscow. The treaty stipulates that Russia and the United States will reduce their respective nuclear warheads to 1,700 to 2,200 by the end of 2012. This is the first time in nearly 10 years since the end of the Cold War that the two countries have signed an agreement to reduce nuclear weapons on a large scale.
