A military coup occurred in Greece on April 21, 1967
Fifty-eight years ago today, on April 21, 1967 (March 12 in the lunar calendar), a military coup took place in Greece. In the early hours of April 21, 1967, Greek soldiers staged a coup and came to power, imposing a military dictatorship. On the same day, King Constantine of Greece swore in a new government: this new government was led by Colonel Papadopoulos. That day, the Greek military also arrested Prime Minister Kananaropoulos and hundreds of people accused of being Communists. Seven years later, Greece is back under civilian rule.
