On this day, 85 years ago, on April 1, 1940 (February 24, 1940 in the lunar calendar), the Eighth Route Army in the northwest of Shanxi won the anti-"mopping up" campaign. On April 1, 1940, the Eighth Route Army of the Northwest Shanxi Province won victory in the counter-"mopping up" campaign, Brigadier Zhang Zongxun (not wearing a military hat) of the 358th Brigade was deployed in battle. On April 1, 1940, the "mopping up" campaign in the Anti-Japanese Base Area in the Northwest Shanxi Province ended. This campaign began on February 23. At the beginning of 1940, the 120th Division of the Eighth Route Army followed the instructions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Central Military Commission and successively recalled the troops that had entered the base areas of central Hebei and Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei to northwest Shanxi for reorganization and training. In order to find out the strength and combat capabilities of the Eighth Route Army in northwest Shanxi, the Japanese army successively dispatched more than 12,000 troops. The troops were divided into six routes to attack Lan County, Lin County, Fangshan, Xing County and other places, harassing Wuzhai, Wenshui, Jiaocheng, Jingle, Sanjiao and other areas, and conducting tentative "mop-ups" of the anti-Japanese base areas in northwest Shanxi. The Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army in Northwest Shanxi adopted guerrilla tactics to attack the enemy rather than engage in large-scale operations with the enemy. During the 38-day anti-"mopping up" operations, they fought with the enemy more than 30 times, killing more than 1100 enemy troops, capturing more than 200 enemy troops, and recovering three counties of Fangshan, Lin County, and Lan County.
