On May 16, 1989, Sino-Soviet relations were normalized
On this day, 36 years ago, May 16, 1989 (April 12, 1989, the relations between the two parties of China and the Soviet Union were normalized. Deng Xiaoping and Gorbachev met formally. On May 15, 1989, at the invitation of Yang Shangkun, President of the People's Republic of China, Mi-Xie-Gorbachev, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the former Soviet Union and General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, paid an official visit to China. This visit is the first visit by a top Soviet leader to China since 1959. Gorbachev, Deng Xiaoping and Gorbachev met on the 16th and announced the normalization of relations between China and the Soviet Union. The two leaders exchanged views on China-Soviet relations and international issues of common concern. When meeting Gorbachev, Zhao Ziyang said that the relations between the two parties will develop smoothly on the basis of the following four principles: 1. independence; 2. complete equality; 3. mutual respect; and 4. non-interference in internal affairs. This is also the principle that our party follows in handling its relations with the Communist Party of other countries. Gorbachev, Li Peng and Gorbachev held formal talks, and the two sides exchanged views on international issues, developing bilateral relations and other issues of common interest. On May 17, Gorbachev delivered a speech to China academics and held a press conference. On the 18th, China and the Soviet Union issued a joint communiqué with a total of 18 articles. On the same day, Gorbachev and his party left Beijing to visit Shanghai, and then returned home.
