On this day, 53 years ago, on April 8, 1972 (February 25, 1972, the Jinding Temple on Mount Emei was reduced to ashes. On April 8, 1972, raging flames turned all the world-famous temples in the Golden Roof of Mount Emei into ashes. During the "Cultural Revolution" in 1972, employees of the 703 Project Preparation Office, which built the Jinding TV transmission system, broke through the "empty city" and entered the halls of the Jinding. They used the wooden temple as a diesel generator room, and stored flammable and explosive substances such as gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and alcohol in the temple. At about 9 a.m. on April 8, He Antai, a diesel unit worker at the TV launch project preparation office, violated safety rules and washed his waist with gasoline next to the electric stove for heating. The gasoline on the waist dropped on the electric stove and caught fire. The fire became more and more violent, and by around 6 p.m., all temples such as Jinding Huazang Temple were burned down. This man-made fire caused by not following rules and regulations caused serious damage to the ancient cultural relics of Mount Emei. It destroyed two copper doors, seven copper walls, one copper stele, and two copper towers. The number of copper stoves, copper bottles, and bronze mirrors was countless; 8972 ivory Buddhas, tin connected lanterns, moraine sand Buddhist scriptures, ancient celebrity calligraphy and paintings were burned; Burn Monk Yongde alone. In particular, there are only two "Beilong Sutra" in the country, and the one collected in Jinding Temple is the most complete, with a total of 7600 copies (woodcut versions), which were burned to ashes by the fire. After the accident, governments at all levels attached great importance to the reconstruction of Jinding Huazang Temple. Xinhuazang Temple was completed in 1990, basically maintaining its original style.
