On this day, 41 years ago, on January 1, 1984 (November 29, 1983, the lunar calendar), China officially became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency. On January 1, 1984, the China government submitted its instrument of acceptance of the Statute to the International Atomic Energy Agency and became a full member state. The International Atomic Energy Agency is an independent intergovernmental agency that has established relations with the United Nations and conducts scientific and technological cooperation among countries around the world in the field of atomic energy. On October 26, 1956, representatives from 82 countries around the world met and adopted the International Atomic Energy Agency statute for safeguards and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. On July 29, 1957, the statute officially came into effect and the International Atomic Energy Agency was established. The purpose of the Agency was established to seek to accelerate the expansion of atomic energy's contribution to peace, health and prosperity around the world, and to ensure that assistance provided by the Agency itself, at its request, or under its supervision and control is not used to advance any military purpose. The agency's main publications include the monthly "Nuclear Fusion", the quarterly "International Atomic Energy Agency Bulletin" and various scientific and technological books on atomic energy and nuclear safeguards. Since its establishment, the Agency has done a lot of work in accordance with the two major functions stipulated in the Statute (safeguards and peaceful uses of nuclear energy). According to regulations, any country can become a member of the agency as long as it is recommended by the agency's board of directors and approved by the General Assembly, and deposits its instrument of acceptance of the agency's statute. In September 2014, Premier Li Keqiang sent a congratulatory letter to the 58th General Assembly of the International Atomic Energy Agency and pointed out: Since China joined the International Atomic Energy Agency 30 years ago, the two sides have always cooperated closely and achieved fruitful results in the fields of nuclear energy, nuclear scientific research, nuclear safety and other fields, making important contributions to promoting the safe and effective use of nuclear energy on a global scale and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
