On this day, 39 years ago, February 22, 1986 (January 14, 1986 in the lunar calendar), President Marcos stepped down during the February Revolution in the Philippines. Former President Marcos and his wife Marcos became the sixth president of the Philippines in November 1965. On September 23, 1972, the Marcos government announced military control across the country, dissolved the National Assembly, stopped all political party activities, and banned strikes, rallies and demonstrations. In August 1983, opposition leader Benigno Aquino was assassinated at Manila Airport when he returned from the United States, causing a wave of protests. The Marcos government was in trouble and decided to hold an early presidential election on February 7, 1986. In December, Corazon-Aquino (Mrs. Ben-Aquino) and Salvador Laurel participated in the presidential election as candidates for the presidency and vice president of the United National Democratic Organization respectively. In the February 1986 election, the ruling party led by Marcos used fraud. The National Assembly announced the election of Marcos, which aroused strong condemnation from the opposition party, and millions of people held rallies in protests and demonstrations. On the evening of February 22, 1986, Defense Minister Enrilay and Acting Chief of General Staff Ramos launched a mutiny, occupied the National Defense Building, and demanded that Marcos resign and support Ko-Aquino. On the 25th, Co-Aquino was officially sworn in as President of the Philippines, with Laurel as Vice President and Prime Minister.
