On this day, 37 years ago, on January 18, 1988 (November 29, 1987 in the lunar calendar), a Southwest Airlines passenger plane crashed in Chongqing, killing 108 people. On January 18, 1988, Civil Aviation Southwest Airlines of China flew from Beijing to Chongqing, Sichuan. At 22:15 Beijing time, it crashed at a straight-line distance of about 5 kilometers from Chongqing Baishiyi Airport, 106 degrees 18 minutes east longitude, and 29 degrees 33 minutes north latitude. All 10 crew members and 98 passengers (including 3 from Japan and 1 from the United Kingdom) died. An hour and a half after the crash occurred, the heads of the Chongqing City Government and Public Security Department immediately rushed to the scene. The leaders of the State Council attached great importance to the air crash. Acting Premier Li Peng immediately dispatched Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council Wang Shuming to Chongqing to organize an investigation and deal with the aftermath.
