37 years ago today, on January 26th, 1988 (December 8th, 1987 in the lunar calendar), the State Council approved a new economic open zone along the coast of Fujian Province. On January 26, 1988, the State Council approved the increase of the scope of coastal economic open zones in Fujian Province from the original 11 counties (districts) to 30 counties (districts), which made Fujian Province form a new pattern of coastal contiguous economic open zones starting from Fuzhou in the north and extending to Putian, Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou and other cities in the south.
