On May 1, 1961, Cuban leader Fidel Castro shouted to a fanatical crowd: "Do you need elections?" The crowd broke out with a sharp cry of "no". In this regard, Castro announced that political officials would no longer be elected. He also told his people that Cuba had formally allied with the Soviet Union and joined the Communist bloc. Facing the parade and Karl Marx's flag, Castro said in his May 1 speech: "If Kennedy didn't like socialism, then we didn't like capitalism either."
