On May 1, 1769, British Prime Minister and Field Marshal Wellington was born.
Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (1769 - 1852) was a British strategist, politician, and one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century. He is the most well-known Duke of Wellington in all generations, so he is often called the Duke of Wellington.
In 1787, Wellington joined the British Army by donating the rank of second lieutenant. While serving in Ireland, he served as an aide-de-camp to two Irish governors and was elected to the British House of Commons to represent Ireland.
In 1793, Wellington participated in the Battle of Flanders and was promoted to lieutenant three years later. After being promoted to lieutenant, he immediately left for India and participated in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War. In 1799, Wellington was appointed governor of Seringapatam and Mysore.
In the Peninsular War, Wellington was promoted to general. In the Battle of Victoria in 1813, he led the Allied army to defeat the French army and was promoted to field marshal. After Napoleon was exiled to Elba in 1814, Wellington became ambassador to France and was made a duke. In the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, he and Blucher defeated Napoleon. Wellington participated in a total of 60 battles in his lifetime.
After entering politics, he joined the Tory Party and served as Prime Minister twice (1828 - 1830, 1834), becoming the last Prime Minister of the Tory Party era. Even though he could not prevent the passage of the Reform Act of 1832, he served in Peel's cabinet before retiring from politics, and he remained one of the leading figures in the House of Lords. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army throughout his life.
