George VI was buried on February 15, 1952
Seventy-three years ago today, on February 15, 1952 (January 20, 1952 lunar calendar), George VI was buried. This is one of the last pictures of George VI while he was alive. On February 15, 1952, George VI (who died on February 6) was buried in George Chapel, Windsor Castle. He was bid farewell by his widow Elizabeth (now Queen Mother) and her daughter (now Queen of England) Elizabeth II, as well as other monarchs, presidents and commissioners from around the world. George inherited the throne in 1936, after his brother Edward VIII abdicated and married "the woman I fell in love with" Wallis Simpson. George's reign came at a difficult time for Britain, but he and his wife continued to inspire their subjects through the hard years of fighting Hitler. They were in the city when London was bombed, and they were often seen serving in the war. George's eldest daughter, Elizabeth II, will rule Britain for him. The queen, then 25, stopped her trip to Africa when she learned of the sudden death of her father and flew back to London immediately with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. The couple had two children, Charles and Anne. George VI died and Elizabeth succeeded him
