January 22, 1928 Shonan Uprising
On this day, 97 years ago, January 22, 1928 (December 30, 1927, the Xiangnan Uprising. The propaganda poster produced by the Hunan Farmers Association to overthrow local tyrants, Zhu De and Chen Yi led the troops preserved from the Nanchang Uprising to move from northern Guangdong to southern Hunan, where the party and mass base were relatively good in mid-January 1928. With the help of local party organizations, they launched the "Yizhang Nianguan Riot"(also known as the "Yizhang Uprising"), and successfully occupied Yizhang County on January 22, kicking off the prelude of the "Southern Hunan Uprising". At the same time, in accordance with the instructions of the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee, the troops were reorganized into the 1st Division of the China Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Army. Soon the Workers 'and Peasants' Revolutionary Army and the Yichang peasant armed forces defeated the invading Third Independent Division under Xu Kexiang in the southern Yichang and Pingshi areas and won a major victory, and the revolutionary armed forces in southern Hunan continued to expand. With the support of the 1st Division of the Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Army, especially after Zhu De and Chen Yi made contact with the Xiangnan Special Committee, Yizhang, Zixing, Yongxing, Leiyang, Rucheng, Anren and other counties in southern Hunan successively carried out large-scale peasant armed uprisings. The revolutionary fire quickly spread to the vast areas along the Hunan-Guangdong border, and hundreds of thousands of people participated in the uprising. Taking advantage of the fact that the war between Li Zongren and Tang Shengzhi was developing towards Hunan and the enemy's troops in southern Hunan were low, the Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Army and the uprising masses occupied Jixian, Leiyang, Yongxing, Zixing and other counties in less than a month, and established Soviet governments in these counties and Yizhang. By mid-March, Xixian County established a Xiangnan Workers and Peasants Democratic Government. Farmers 'armed forces in various counties were also rapidly established and developed. Yizhang formed the 3rd Division of the Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Army, Leiyang formed the 4th Division of the Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Army, Jixian formed the 7th Division of the Workers and Peasants Revolutionary Army, and Yongxing and Zixing formed two independent regiments respectively. Because the Xiangnan Special Committee committed the mistake of putschism and was seriously divorced from the masses, the uprising forces lost the support of the people. At the end of March 1928, the enemy in Hunan and Guangdong mobilized seven divisions to attack southern Hunan from three sides, north, south and west. The uprising troops and peasant troops were forced to withdraw from southern Hunan and move towards Jinggangshan. Mao Zedong led his troops to respond. In late April, Zhu De and Chen Yi led the uprising troops to Ninggang Long City. After the two armies joined forces, they were jointly organized into the Fourth Army of China Workers and Peasants 'Red Army. Mao Zedong served as secretary of the Military Commission and party representative, Zhu De served as commander, and the entire army was organized into three divisions, totaling about 10,000 people.
