On this day, 38 years ago, February 17, 1987 (January 20, 1987 in the lunar calendar), China was sentenced in the largest drug trafficking case in nearly 30 years. Three drug traffickers appeared in the court of first instance. On February 17, 1987, the Yunnan Province High Court announced that the Supreme Court of the People's Republic of China had ordered the execution of major drug traffickers Wen Yuanhe (Thai national) and Dai Wenxuan (Hong Kong resident). The two criminals were immediately executed. Wen Yuanhe and Dai Wenxuan separately sneaked into Yunnan in April 1986, plotting to smuggle drugs imported from abroad to Hong Kong via Kunming and Guangzhou. Based on intelligence provided by Thai and American police, China's public security organs arrested Wen Yuanhe, Dai Wenxuan and Yu Xikuan in August of that year. 22768 grams of heroin were seized, the largest heroin trafficking incident uncovered in China in 30 years.
