On this day 79 years ago, on January 20, 1946 (December 18, 1945 lunar calendar), de Gaulle resigned as president of the French provisional government. On November 13, 1945, 555 delegates unanimously proclaimed de Gaulle as president of the French provisional government, one and a half years after de Gaulle led his army to liberate Paris. Due to the frequent special comments and demands of Communists in the government, and their insistence on proposing a 20% reduction in the defense budget, de Gaulle announced his resignation as president on January 20, 1946, ending a term of only three months. Successor Felix, the cabinet members were 6 Socialists, Communists, and Republicans, and 1 non-party member. On December 22, 1958, de Gaulle was elected as the first president of the French Fifth Republic.
