The first Asian Games opened on March 4, 1951
On this day, 74 years ago, on March 4, 1951 (January 27, 1951 in the lunar calendar), the first Asian Games opened. From March 4 to 10, 1951, the first Asian Games hosted by the Asian Olympic Council was held in New Delhi, India. There were 11 countries participating in the competition, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and India, with 489 athletes (including 31 female athletes). The events include track and field, swimming, weightlifting, cycling, basketball and football, with a total of 59 gold medals. In this competition, Japan won 26, India 15, Iran 8, the Philippines 5, and Singapore 5. On the eve of the opening ceremony, the China sports tourism group visited the Asian Games at the invitation of the Indian Sports Association and did not send athletes to participate.
