Huang Youdi Huang Youdi was born in Gaoyao, Guangdong on January 14, 1912 (November 24, the year of the 1911 lunar calendar). According to his will, he was born on November 26, the first year of the Republic of China, which should be January 14, 1912 according to the calculation of the Western calendar; but the will also pointed out that he was 76 years old when he moved to Taiwan on July 16, 1987, so his birth year should be 1911. In addition, during his lifetime, he often emphasized that he was the same age as the Republic of China, and there are documents that indicate that Huang Youdi was 38 years old when he moved to Hong Kong. Therefore, it is controversial whether Huang's birth year should be calculated as 1911 or 1912. Huang Youdi has been exposed to music since he was 11 years old. In 1930, he entered the Department of Education of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou and studied violin and composition theory at the same time. Graduated at the age of 23 (1934) and immediately began a career in music education. He once served as a music teacher at Zhanjiang No. 1 Middle School. In 1934, he went to Hong Kong to obtain an advanced degree in violin from the Trinity College of Music in the United Kingdom. During the Anti-Japanese War, he engaged in anti-Japanese singing activities and music teaching in Guangdong Province. Before moving to Hong Kong in 1949, he lived in Guangdong. After arriving in Hong Kong, he successively taught at Deming Middle School, Datong Middle School and Zhuhai Academy. Received a degree in violin (L.R.S. M) from the Royal College of Music in 1955. In 1957, he went to Rome, Italy to study music. After six years, he graduated from the Composition Department of the Mande Academy of Art and obtained a Diploma in Composition (M.C.M.A.R.). After returning to Hong Kong in 1963, he devoted himself to music creation, music education and promotion. He wrote school songs for many schools in Hong Kong, ranging from primary school, middle school to junior college. In order to promote the popularization of music, he did not charge any music copyright fees, so he also submitted a request to the Hong Kong Composers and Writers Association to withdraw from the conference and was accepted. After retiring from Zhuhai Academy in 1987, he moved to Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He is still actively promoting community music activities and guiding music groups of various sizes in Kaohsiung City. He has successively won the Taiwan Ministry of Education Literature and Art Award (1962), the Sun Yat-sen Literature and Art Award (1967), the Haiguang Medal (1968), the "China Literature and Art Association" Honorary Award (1982), the "National Special Contribution Award to Literature and Art"(1983), the "Puguang Golden Award of the Ministry of National Defense", the "Executive Yuan Cultural Medal"(1994), etc. In 1991, Huang Youdi met Master Jing Ding, the abbot of Yuanzhao Temple in Niaosong Township, Kaohsiung County, and Master Xuan Hui, the supervisor, and then enthusiastically promoted the work of "promoting Tao with music." Since then, Huang Youdi and Buddhism were established. Huang Youdi has created more than 100 Buddhist chorus works for Yuanzhao Temple over the years and plays an important role in modern Buddhist music. In 2008, he moved to Yuanzhao Temple for a long time to live and recuperate (he suffered his first fracture at that time). In 2009, Huang Youdi was sent to Kaohsiung's Veterans General Hospital for treatment due to stagnant lung water. After being discharged, he accidentally fell at home and replaced his hip joint. In early June, he was transferred to Kaohsiung's Veterans General Hospital for emergency treatment due to respiratory failure. He has been in the intensive care unit. On November 22, Christ's Universal King's Day, Cardinal Shan Guoxi baptized Huang Youdi on his sickbed. His holy name was Ambo. However, Huang Youdi was too invested in academic research, so he ignored his wife and daughter, and the relationship between husband and wife was not integrated; in addition, Huang Youdi went to Hong Kong and Italy for further studies in 1949 and 1957, so Liu and his three daughters moved to the United States to live in 1956. After Huang Youdi returned to Hong Kong after completing his studies, the two finally agreed to divorce in 1965. The two have been married for more than 20 years, but only spent the first few years together after marriage. While Huang Youdi was recuperating at Yuanzhao Temple, the three daughters also occasionally came to Taiwan to take care of their father. Later, at Huang Youdi's memorial service, the eldest daughter Huang Wei (foreign name Mimi) and the second daughter Huang Sun (foreign name Jane) both came to Taiwan to participate, while the younger daughter Huang Qian (foreign name Nancy) did not accompany her.
