Pulitzer, like Joseph Pulitzer, was born in Hungary on April 10, 1847 to a Jewish family. At the age of 17, he ran away from his family and wanted to join the army. He was rejected due to poor eyesight and weak health. He was later recruited by the US army and became a cavalryman. He became an American citizen in 1867. In 1868, he became a reporter for the German-language "Western Post". With a strong thirst for knowledge and abundant energy, he tirelessly dug all kinds of news, and later became the full owner of the newspaper. By 1878, he had become proficient in English and bought the Telegraph in St. Louis for $2,500 on December 9 of that year. He later merged with the local Post to form the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
