Twenty-seven years ago today, on May 13, 1998 (April 18, 1998 lunar calendar), India and Pakistan engaged in a new round of nuclear competition. India's first underground nuclear test site began on May 13, 1998, and India conducted five consecutive nuclear tests, which shocked the international community. Clinton called on countries to sanction India and asked Pakistan to remain calm.
