On May 3, 1993, Chieko Oho crossed the Tsugaru Strait alone
Thirty-two years ago today, on May 3, 1993 (March 12, 1993), Chieko Omagu crossed the Tsugaru Strait alone. Chieko Omagu successfully crossed the Tsugaru Strait. On May 3, 1993, Chieko Omagu, a 43-year-old female piano teacher in Japan, swam solo across the 35-kilometer-wide Tsugaru Strait between Hokkaido and Honshu, Japan, becoming the first woman to cross the Tsugaru Strait alone. Omagu Chieko launched the water from Aomori Prefecture at the northern tip of Honshu at 1:00 am that day, and had to swim on a curved route to bypass the current. Because the water was too cold, Chieko had the idea of not swimming down halfway. With the encouragement of her swimming coach who followed her on the boat, Chieko persevered and finally swam to Fukushima, Hokkaido, at 1:40 pm that day. It took 12 hours and 40 minutes, and the actual tour distance was about 50 kilometers.
