On this day 42 years ago, on May 4, 1983 (March 22, 1983 in the lunar calendar), the Communist Party of Iran was dissolved. May 4, 1983. Among several related measures taken today, Iran's Islamic revolutionary regime banned its own Communist Party, the Dodd Party, and ordered 18 Soviet diplomats to leave Iran. The party has been under attack since February, when 70 Communist Party members were arrested on treason charges. In recent days, television stations have broadcast confessions to Iranians from seven senior officials of the Dodd Party, several of whom confessed to having provided political and military intelligence to the Soviets. The Dodd Party, which numbers less than 2,000, was formed under the influence of the Soviet occupation of northern Iran during World War II. It opposed the Shah of Iran, participated in the Islamic Revolution that overthrew the Shah, and has always supported the Ayala Khomeini regime. Its dissolution is due to the struggle of ethnic factions. This sect was as strongly opposed to the Soviet Union as it was against the United States.
