On February 27, 1991, Kuwait regained its national independence and sovereignty
Thirty-four years ago today, on February 27, 1991 (January 13, 1991 lunar calendar), Kuwait regained its national independence and sovereignty. On February 27, 1991, Kuwait City, a city that has attracted worldwide attention for nearly seven months, rang out the slogans of "Free Kuwait" from morning to night. Hundreds of cars adorned with slogans, bunting flags, and horns blared, carrying happy, singing and dancing Kuwaitis through the city center. From time to time, young men fired machine guns and submachine guns into the sky to celebrate. Women held national flags and pictures of the emir, all smiles. The Supreme Advisory Bureau of the Kuwaiti People's Assembly issued a statement in Jeddah on the same day, calling on the Kuwaiti people to strengthen national unity in order to rebuild the war-torn motherland. Kuwait's Supreme Advisory Council held a two-day meeting on the 26th and 27th under the chairpersonship of Kuwaiti Prime Minister Crown Prince Saad. Thirty-six prominent Kuwaiti figures, including cabinet members, members of parliament, politicians and businesspeople, attended the conference. The statement also called on the Kuwaiti people to work diligently to restore the infrastructure of the motherland damaged by war. Some opposition leaders in Kuwait expressed their support for the recently announced law of military control "implemented in special circumstances" by the government. On the 28th, President of the People's Republic of China Yang Shangkun sent a telegram to His Highness the Emir of Kuwait, Jaber Ahmad Al-Sabah, to warmly congratulate Kuwait on the restoration of its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
