Hou Hsiao-hsien (born April 8, 1947) is a Taiwanese film director born in Mei County, Guangdong Province, Republic of China. His father was originally a local education section chief. In 1948, his family immigrated to Taiwan and was a Hakka from other provinces. Hou Hsiao-hsian likes to use long lenses, empty lenses and fixed lens positions to allow characters to tell stories directly in the lens, which is a major feature of his films. Currently he is the honorary chairman of the Taiwan Film Culture Association. Hou Hsiao-hsien entered the film industry in 1973 and served as the director of Li Xing's "Heart Has Thousands of Knits". Through this, he slowly accumulated experience. In 1975, he began to write his first script,"Peach Blossom Girl Fighting the Duke of Zhou" directed by Lai Chengying, and concurrently served as deputy director. In 1980, Hou Xiaoxian directed his first film,"It's She's Walking". Then in 1983, he invested in filming "Xiao Bi's Story", serving as assistant director and screenwriter, and since then launched the trend of "Taiwan New Films". In the same year,"My Son's Big Doll" was co-produced with two other directors Wan Ren and Zeng Zhuangxiang. It was the first artistic film with all-Taiwanese pronunciation. It began to gain some fame and began to shoot films with high realism, such as "The People from the Wind Cabinet" and "Winter and Winter Holidays". As martial law gradually subsided, he first filmed the autobiographical film "Past Days of Childhood". Because the content involved criticizing the national government at that time, the process of seeking cooperation was very difficult. Later, he filmed "In Love with the Dust", which broke the overly pretentious and hypocritical content of past Chinese films. What really gave him a certain reputation internationally was the Taiwan trilogy (or the Tragic Trilogy)-"City of Tragic","Dream of Life" and "Good Man and Good Woman", which established his status as a Taiwanese film master. Among them,"City of Sadness" is the first Chinese-language film to win the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, one of the three major international film festivals.
