On this day, 89 years ago, on May 15, 1936 (March 25, 1936, the lunar calendar), Schuschniger became the head of the only political party in Austria. On May 15, 1936, Chancellor Kurt Schuschniger became the leader of Austria's only legal political party, the Fatherland Front, thus consolidating his rule over the country. Former Deputy Prime Minister Prince Ernest von Stalemberg was dismissed from his leadership position in the Fatherland Front party at a meeting of party leaders in Vienna. Amid the smiles of these leaders, Stalembberg was appointed as a patron of the Fatherland Front Party's "Mother Help Department". Prince Stalemberg was on his way to Rome to watch the Austrian-Italian football match there and was therefore unable to respond to the humiliation. The action gave Schuschniger control of all Austrian military forces, including the militia once commanded by Prince Stalemberg. Schuschniger said he took over the leadership of the Fatherland Front because the serious problems facing Austria forced him to unify the country's leadership.
