Eighty-five years ago today, on March 10, 1940 (February 2, 1940), the secret roundtable talks between Chiang and Japan ended. On March 10, 1940, the roundtable meeting between Chiang and Japan ended on the second floor of Dongfei Foreign Exchange in Hong Kong. In his speech, Chiang Chen Chaolin conveyed Chiang Kai-shek's three instructions: (1) must obtain a guarantee of Japanese withdrawal; (2) clarify the Japanese side's peace conditions; (3) the talks should be held in top secret. The Japanese side explained the so-called three principles of "good neighbor friendship", "common defense against the Communist Party", and "economic support", demanding that the Chongqing government recognize "Manchukuo", give up the anti-Japanese policy of tolerating communism, conclude an anti-communist agreement, and allow Japanese troops to be stationed in North China. During the discussions, Chongqing put forward eight "peace opinions", the first of which was: "Regarding the Manchuria issue, China agrees in principle to consider it, but how to negotiate it separately." The second article was: "Regarding China's abandonment of the anti-Japanese policy of tolerating communism, it is an inevitable step taken by China after the peace agreement." The third article was: "Regarding the issue of mutual prevention of communism, we agree in principle, but the military secret agreement shall be secretly agreed after the peace is restored." The meeting failed to reach a consensus. The meeting was held three days ago. The Japanese attendees were Suzuki, Imai, and Shigeki Mori; Jiang's attendees were Song Ziliang, Deputy Director of the Staff Office of Chongqing Province, Lieutenant General Chen Chaolin, former Counselor in Germany and Secretary of the Supreme National Defense Conference Zhang Yousan, Deputy Director of the Attendants Office Zhang Hannian, and Liaison Zhang Zhiping.
