Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On April 9, 1553, the French playwright Rabelais died
472 years ago today, on April 9, 1553 (March 27, 1553 in the lunar calendar), French playwright Rabelais died. François Rabelais, a Renaissance figure, was born in 1494 in Chinon, the province of Douline in central France. His father was a rich judge. He spent a free and happy childhood in his father's estate. As a teenager, he was forced to receive a dull and dry religious education, and then in 1520 he entered a monastery and became a monk. Rabelais is most praised by future generations for his masterpiece "The Legend of the Giant". In 1532, the first book of "The Legend of the Giant" was published, and the second book was published a year later. The signature was replaced by the pseudonym Algoffrey Naziere, which was rearranged after the sixteen letters of the original name. After the book was published, it was warmly welcomed by the urban bourgeoisie and the lower class of society, but it was extremely hated by the church and aristocrats. It was declared a "obscene book" by the court and banned it. Around 1535, François I changed course, turned to reactionary Catholicism, openly suppressed Protestantism, which represented progress, and frustrated the Renaissance movement. Rabelais was implicated in this way and suffered many bad luck. In the latter part of his life, he was financially disadvantaged and had to live in seclusion several times to avoid risks, and was even imprisoned. A friend of his was also sentenced to death for republishing his banned works and his body was displayed to the public. Despite his bad luck, he failed to erase his fighting spirit and undermine his courage. Rabelais continued tirelessly to create the last three books of "The Legend of the Giant". In 1545, under the protection of the king's charter, Rabelais published the third book of The Legend of the Giant under his real name. But the king died soon after, the novel was banned, the publisher was burned to death, and Rabelais was forced to flee. It was not until 1550 that he was allowed to return to France. After returning to China, Rabelais took up a religious position and treated the poor in his spare time. Later, he went to school to teach. While teaching at school, he completed the fourth and fifth volumes of "The Legend of the Giant". The creation of this novel took 20 years. "The Legend of the Giant" became popular after its publication, and its sales in two months exceeded the nine years of sales of the Bible. Over the past 1,000 years, it has been published in more than 200 versions in various languages! There are many versions in my country. "The Legend of the Giant" exposes the darkness and corruption of the medieval church and reflects the pursuit of the individuality liberation of the bourgeoisie by the humanists during the Renaissance. In Rabelais's ideal society, human nature is kind and the people are simple. His ideal code of conduct is: "Do whatever you like." When reading Rabelais's "The Legend of the Giant", everyone can laugh happily, heartily, and laugh to their heart's content. This is the reason why he is praised as the "Great Composer".
