January 8, 1959 Charles de Gaulle became President of the Fifth Republic of France
66 years ago today, January 8, 1959 (November 29, 1958, the lunar calendar), Charles de Gaulle became President of the Fifth Republic of France. At the inauguration ceremony of Charles de Gaulle, Charles de Gaulle (second from left in front) entered the liberated Paris. Charles was born in Lille in 1890 and graduated from the Army School of Saint-Cyr in 1912. He was a captain in the army during World War I and was promoted to major in 1920. During World War II, he was the commander of the Tank Brigade. In 1940, he was promoted to commander of the 4th Armored Division. After Paris discussed defense, he left for Britain and delivered a radio speech to the French people in London, calling on the French people to continue to resist fascist aggression. Later, he founded and led the French National Council to fight German aggression. After the liberation of Paris in 1944, he returned to France and served concurrently as Minister of Defense. He became prime minister in June 1958 and proposed a new constitution to strengthen presidential and executive powers. He became President of France in the subsequent presidential election; Re-elected in 1965. He died of illness on November 9, 1970. De Gaulle pursued an independent foreign policy and defense policy and opposed major power control.
