On January 5, 1900, Dasheng Yarn Factory, a famous private cotton textile enterprise in old China, was officially put into operation.
One of the national capital enterprises in early modern China. The founder Zhang Jian, also known as Ji Zhi and Si 'an, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. In the Qing Dynasty, he served as Minister of Industry and Chief of Agriculture and Commerce in the early years of the Republic of China. He was an accomplished bourgeois entrepreneur.
In 1895, Zhang Jian, in the name of "Premier Tonghai Area Business" appointed by Zhang Zhidong, the governor of Liangjiang, began to plan to establish a yarn factory in Nantong, and the process of collecting shares was quite laborious. In 1897, Zhang Jian agreed with the Jiangsu Bureau of Commerce to shelve the imported British spinning machine 20400 ingots in Shanghai, and the discount was 250,000 silver; the other was 250,000 shares, and the actual income was 195,100. It was called a joint venture between officials and businesspeople, but the official did not send staff to participate in the factory. In 1898, the yarn factory started construction at Tangjia Gate in Nantong, and was completed and put into operation in 1899. The factory was later called Dasheng No. 1 Factory.
In 1903, 40,800 additional spindles were added, and another 26,000 additional spindles were purchased with the surplus to open the second Dasheng Plant, which was put into operation in 1907. In 1915, a cloth factory was added, and a third factory was planned in Haimen. In 1921, the Dasheng subsidiary factory was established. Soon it was renamed Dasheng First, Second and Third Textile Companies. Since then, due to natural disasters, warlords fought and the scale of operations was too large, and the capital that suffered losses was unable to flow. It has been supervised by the syndicate since 1922. In 1923, the Dasheng subsidiary factory was built in the south of Nantong. The fourth factory has a total capital of 7.084 million taels, 160360 spindles of spinning machines, and 1342 looms; its products are mainly cotton yarns and white cotton cloth of less than 20 pieces. In 1925, the Jiangsu and Zhejiang consortium took over the establishment of various factories in Dalian. In 1935, the Second Textile Company closed down. In 1952, the First and Third Textile Companies were jointly public-private and state-owned in 1966.
