In 1919, He Lu returned to China and successively worked at National Southeast University (now Nanjing University), Shanghai China-France Tonghui Industrial and Commercial School, Datong University, Fourth Sun Yat-sen University, Yunnan University, Chongqing University, and served as professor, provost, and president of Chongqing University. After liberation, he also served as a member of the Southwest Military and Political Committee, deputy director of the Southwest Culture and Education Committee, representative of the People's Congress of Sichuan Province, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and China Mathematics Council.

Once, an out-of-school young man looked for He and learned from the young man that he had dropped out of school due to poverty, so he went to Zaiying Middle School for free, and sometimes he was exempted from paying for food. He Lu pays attention to academic research, advocates the spirit of "hard work Saburo", and has been intoxicated in the field of applied mathematics for decades. His writings include "Review of Quadratic Equations", "Algebra", "Theory of Determinants", "Differential Calculus", "An Overview of Einstein's Theory", etc. Therefore, He Lu is an upright person and dares to criticize the current shortcomings. Chiang Kai-shek's forces entered Sichuan, and the spy chief Kang Ze was ordered to go to Chongqing University to see He Lu. Afterwards, he said: "Chen Lifu asked me to go to arrange a dynasty for Chiang Kai-shek, but I was not qualified to resign, because to arrange a dynasty for Chiang Kai-shek, you need to spend the bridge of your nose, and I don't want to spend the bridge of my nose, so I don't go."
