Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The National Geographical Society was established in Washington, D.C
On January 13, 1888, the National Geographical Society was established in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the famous explorers who explored the Grand CanyonJohn Wesley PowellWaiting for 33 scientific workers. Powell (1834-1902) John Wesley Powell was an American geologist, geographer, and anthropologist. He was born on March 24, 1834, in Mount Morris, New York. The American Civil War cost Powell, a 35-year-old artillery major, his left arm, and he left the barracks. But physical disability did not hinder Major Powell, who had high aspirations. In 1869, Powell gathered nine brothers with like-minded interests to form the first Grand Canyon Expedition in the United States, planning to explore the entire Colorado Grand Canyon area. Without any advanced instruments, the dislocation of continental plates and the cutting effect of sand flows can be explained by observing the quartzite and mud layers deposited in the canyon interlayer. After his 98-day adventure diary was published, it was widely circulated, causing great shocks in the United States and Europe. His expeditions also opened up new areas for geological research. In 1872, Powell again successfully explored the Grand Canyon along the Colorado River. As a result, Powell established a high reputation in the exploration and scientific circles, which enabled him to become director of the Smithsonian Museum in the United States.
