65 years ago today, April 26, 1960 (April 1, 1960, lunar calendar), South Korean President Rhee Seungman stepped down. South Korea's "April 19" Revolution led to the downfall of Syngman Rhee. On April 26, 1960, South Korean President Rhee Seungman issued a statement, thus ending the 12-year-old dictatorship of Syngman Rhee. Li Chengwan (1875 - 1965), whose childhood name was Li Chenglong, was Yunan. He was born in Pingshan on Huanghai Road and was born in an aristocratic family of two classes. In 1898, he was arrested for participating in innovative political activities. After being released from prison in 1904, he went to the United States to study and received a doctorate in philosophy from Princeton University. After returning to China in 1910, he was arrested for conducting anti-Japanese activities centered on the YMCA. He was released in 1912 and returned to the United States. In 1914, he established the "Korea Pacific" magazine in Hawaii to promote anti-Japanese ideas. In 1919, he served as president of the Provisional Government of South Korea in Shanghai and wrote to U.S. President Wilson to request "mandate rule" over North Korea. In March 1925, he resigned as president and went to the United States. He returned to China in October 1945 and, with the support of the United States, was elected South Korea's first president in 1948, serving four consecutive terms. After 12 years in power, he forcibly changed the constitution many times and brutally attacked political opponents. He implemented authoritarian rule internally and implemented pro-American and anti-communist policies externally. In 1960, the Korean people's anti-dictatorship "4.19" revolution broke out.
